AMR Surveillance, Stewardship and One Health

Trained 2,000+ health professionals, implemented stewardship programs in 20+ hospitals, and led nationwide AMR surveillance across human, animal, environment, and food sectors using a One Health approach.

Description: GTA Foundation, in collaboration with phect NEPAL and the Henry Ford Health System Global Health Initiative, has been at the forefront of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) efforts in Nepal, implementing stewardship programs in more than 20 hospitals across Kathmandu and Pokhara. Through this initiative, over 2,000 healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses, and pharmacists have been trained in responsible antibiotic use, infection prevention, and evidence-based treatment guidelines. These efforts combine onsite workshops, web-based learning via the www.glamr-gta.org platform, and research-driven education programs.

Expanding its reach beyond hospitals, GTA Foundation champions a One Health approach acknowledging that antimicrobial resistance is a cross-sectoral challenge requiring coordinated action across human, animal, environmental, and food systems. Stewardship efforts have been extended to veterinary service providers and farming communities, recognizing their vital role in antibiotic use and resistance. Complementing these efforts, GTA Foundation is actively involved in nationwide AMR surveillance spanning human health, animal health, environmental monitoring, and food safety sectors. This comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach, combining advocacy, education, research, and surveillance, underscores GTA’s long-standing commitment to strengthening AMR control, promoting One Health solutions, and safeguarding public health in Nepal.
