A Randomized Control Trial of an Antimicrobial Stewardship Program for Veterinary Service Providers and Farming Communities in Nepal
Status: On-going
Objective: To assess antibiotic dispensing and use practices among veterinary service providers
and farming communities in Nepal, identify factors contributing to inappropriate antibiotic use in
livestock, and develop, implement, and evaluate an antimicrobial stewardship program. The
program aims to promote appropriate antibiotic use, improve knowledge and perceptions of
antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and enhance infection prevention and control (IPC) practices.
The project will also establish a baseline for longitudinal evaluation and foster local ownership
and sustainability through the formation of a Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) and a Community
Advisory Board (CAB).
Expected Outcome: The study will generate evidence on antibiotic use practices, knowledge
gaps, and drivers of inappropriate antibiotic use in livestock. This data will inform the
development of tailored educational and stewardship interventions for veterinary service
providers and farming communities. Through a randomized control trial, the effectiveness of
these interventions in improving antibiotic stewardship and reducing inappropriate use will be
evaluated. Findings will also contribute to strengthening policy and programmatic frameworks
for veterinary AMR stewardship, supporting the Nepal Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock
Development.
