Integrated Activities and Tools for Antimicrobial Stewardship Workshop
The GTA Foundation, with support from the Henry Ford Health (HFH) Global Health Initiative (Detroit, Michigan, USA), successfully conducted a two-day workshop focused on integrated activities and tools for antimicrobial stewardship (AMS). The training was based on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) AMS toolkit, specifically designed for low- and middle-income countries. The workshop, held in collaboration with the Quality, Standard, and Regulation Division of the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP), was organized as part of the WHO’s Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week, ensuring that physicians received the tools necessary to provide effective antibiotic treatment for patients both today and in the future. A total of 10 participant physicians were invited from five different hospitals, representing a mix of governmental, non-governmental, and community/university-run hospitals. These participants were trained to become AMR champions, with the aim of implementing and advocating for antimicrobial stewardship programs at their respective hospitals. The WHO AMS toolkit is a comprehensive guide for establishing AMS programs within healthcare settings. It includes focused leadership training for physicians, nurses, microbiologists, pharmacists, and housekeeping staff. In addition, a feasibility study was conducted to assess the integration and implementation of the toolkit across healthcare settings in Nepal and three other countries. This study was led by the GTA and HFHS teams to evaluate the effectiveness and potential impact of AMS programs in these regions.
