Environmental AMR Surveillance

Following the successful completion of intensive training at the Department of Environment (DoE) microbiology laboratory, we are pleased to share that environmental AMR surveillance has officially begun, with sample collection and processing now being actively underway.

This marks a significant milestone under the Joint AMR Surveillance initiative, led by the National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL), in collaboration with the Central Veterinary Laboratory (CVL) and DoE.

The initiative is supported by the Group for Technical Assistance (GTA), the implementing partner of FHI 360 Nepal through the Fleming Fund Country Grant in Nepal (FFCGN).

As part of this effort, the DoE is collecting and analyzing environmental water samples to isolate and confirm ESBL-producing E. coli. The data generated will play a critical role in informing evidence-based AMR policies and driving cross-sectoral action.

We are proud to collaborate with national and international partners to strengthen AMR surveillance systems in Nepal.
